Hydropower dynamic regulation

Hydroelectric power generation is an invaluable asset for grid frequency regulation. Hydroelectric generators can adjust their power output in a matter of seconds, making them one of the best sources for primary and secondary frequency response, to compensate grid imbalances. 

However, this agility comes with challenges: rapid accelerations and decelerations subject generators and turbines to considerable mechanical and thermal stress, leading to accelerated wear and potential overloads, negatively impacting maintenance, operational, lifespan and reliability.

FESS can support hydropower assets, leading to reduce those damaging stresses and improving primary frequency response, from second to millisecond, enhancing critical ancillary services capabilities and reducing environmental risk.
